Choreographer, Dance Maker, Mover

Sophie Nüzel is a German choreographer and dance maker, based in the UK. She creates pieces and happenings rooted in contemporary dance , often tapping into storytelling and physical theatre, primarily for young children, families and cross generational audiences and casts. She aims to create pieces that allow the audience to enter and experience work through all senses – work that is full of atmosphere and magic. The work is often calm and sensitive, while still being playful, and aims to encourage audiences to use their imaginations, to go on a journey.

Participation is key in her work- she loves creating communities through which happens when you create something together. The first 2 ‘Little’ pieces- The Little Witch and The Adventures of the Little Ghost toured to mostly sell out shows The Place, PDSW, DanceEast, Artsdepot & The Albany, with 3000+ people engaged- watching, performing & making dance, many for the first time. The last piece The Little Watersprite, will tour to The Place, Dance East, Brighton Dome, PDSW, Great Ormond Street Hospital as well as Wiltshire Creatives/ Salisbury Playhouse and Germany.

She embraces the fluidity of working with professionals and non-professionals- offering a platform to anyone & anybody: bodies that aren’t often seen in performance or those that have never performed. She questions what constitutes dance, uncovering people’s own movement styles, supporting people to feel comfortable in their body and movement.

She delivers projects and classes ranging from vocational classes to sessions and projects with people suffering from Parkinson&Dementia. She regularly teaches for organisations such as The Place, Laban, ArtsEd as well as Step into Dance, delivering activity in over 300 schools, PRU, SEN and youth centres.
